FordPass: connectivity at your fingertips

When used together, the key features of the FordPass app and FordPass Connect include command and control functionality, key vehicle information, online resources and links to emergency roadside assistance.

Vehicle Status and Remote Vehicle Monitoring: Through the FordPass app’s Vehicle Status feature, owners can check their vehicle’s key variables including fuel level and oil status, and tyre pressures (where the Tyre Pressure Monitoring System is fitted on the Wildtrak) and mileage through the convenience of their smartphone.

Remote Start and Stop (automatic models only): Using the FordPass app, drivers can start their vehicle’s engine from home, the office or elsewhere via smartphone, enabling the vehicle’s cabin to automatically start heating or cooling to the last used setting. This helps ensure a cool, comfortable interior on a hot summer day, or a de-iced, warmed, and inviting vehicle in winter. The vehicle is automatically locked when remote starting. It can only be driven once the driver inserts the ignition key or presses the ‘Start’ button with the proximity key in the vehicle. A scheduled start can also be programmed for a predetermined time via the FordPass app and can be configured to repeat on selected days throughout the week.

Remote Lock and Unlock: Drivers can lock and unlock their Ford remotely, meaning they don’t have to rush back to their cars to check if they have remembered to lock their doors. This also allows drivers to let passengers into their vehicles regardless of whether they are there or not.

Vehicle Locator: Courtesy of a map and location tracker in the FordPass app, drivers can find their way back to their vehicle in a busy parking area without the need to remember exactly where they parked it. This is even more convenient when you share your vehicle with one or more members of your household.

Vehicle Health Alerts: The FordPass app capability extends to Vehicle Health Alerts, which can be sent directly to a smart device pre-empting service needs, general maintenance such as a low washer fluid alert, and more. The alert is designed to identify specific issues and even recommend a course of action.

Map and Search: Through the FordPass app, customers have access to an extensive range of search options, including Ford dealers, fuel stations, available parking, entertainment, coffee shops and travel destinations such as hotels and lodges.

Maintenance Schedule: All key vehicle information is available in the FordPass app, including the vehicle identification number (VIN), new vehicle warranty (including the start date for the four-year/120 000km comprehensive warranty), Ford Protect Plan (with expiry date and end distance for the six-year/90 000km service plan). The owner can also check the upcoming service intervals, and schedule service at their preferred dealer with the app linking to the www.myfordjourney.co.za website to facilitate this process.

Roadside Assistance: Throughout the FordPass app, customers have instant access to Ford's 24-hour emergency Roadside Assistance, which is valid for a period of three years/unlimited distance and is provided by the Automobile Association (AA). Vehicle Support: The app provides extensive additional resources for customers, including how-to videos explaining features and technologies in the Ranger, a digital Owner’s Manual, and an Alerts Guide addressing a few issues such as water in fuel, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) warning, and numerous other warning messages.

FordPass Guide: When you need help, a friendly FordPass Guide is there to offer one-to-one assistance via phone or e-mail, directly from the app.

Over-the-air updates: FordPass Connect enables over-the-air (OTA) modem software updates seamlessly via the embedded modem to keep the vehicle current with the latest technology, performance, and safety by wirelessly delivering features and quality enhancements – without requiring a visit to a dealer or service centre.

Do's and Don’ts when driving your vehicle:

Are you putting your car at unnecessary risk because of bad driving habits?

Without realizing it, you may be causing damage to your car by doing seemingly insignificant things.

Vehicles are often among your most valuable possessions and are the ones on which you rely most heavily. Taking proper care of it will ensure it lasts as long as possible.

As Spring arrived, we at Ford Umhlanga made the commitment to go green to put a positive impact on the environment. As a result, we decided that all employees across all departments would participate. Due to the pollution in the air, our surrounding area needed an Eco-Friendly boost to assist our environment, so we decided to give back to nature.

Researching what plant would be the best fit, we came across the Spekboom, a succulent plant native to South Africa. Among its many Spekboom facts is that it is indigenous to the province of the Eastern Cape and is revered as a miracle plant. Bright green, small-leaved plant found in Southern Africa looks ordinary, but don't be fooled - it is very special!

Below are a few of the many fascinating facts about this plant.

#1 Leaves are Edible

The taste of spekboom leaf is pleasant but changes throughout the day as the sun rises and sets. During the day leaves have an acid flavour and become less acidic towards the evening. The delicious greenery is heavily browsed by game and a firm favourite of several wild animals, especially elephants!

#2 Communities Use Spekboom Leaves for Their Medicinal Values

The leaves are used medicinally and in traditional home construction.

#3 It Helps to Fight Climate Change and Air Pollution

This plant helps to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by acting as a carbon sponge, improving the quality of the air we breathe. More specifically, spekboom can absorb between four and ten tonnes of carbon per hectare. This incredible tree uses carbon to make plant tissue and produce oxygen. According to The Spekboom Foundation, spekboom’s capacity to offset harmful carbon emissions is compared to that of moist, subtropical forests. This remarkable plant is unique in that it stores solar energy to perform photosynthesis at night. This makes a spekboom thicket 10 times more effective per hectare at carbon fixing than any tropical rainforest.”

The new Ranger Raptor Special Edition has been confirmed to launch in South Africa by Ford.

Built in limited numbers to ensure exclusivity, the new Ranger Raptor Special Edition has several additional functional and styling enhancements.

The Ranger Raptor Special Edition is powered by Ford’s 157kW 2.0‑litre Bi-Turbo diesel engine developing 500Nm of torque, driving a responsive 10-speed automatic. Its unique Terrain Management System enables drivers to tackle a wide range of terrain and driving scenarios, including Baja Mode for optimum off-road performance.

The standard fitment of the lockable Mountain Top black roller shutter is a great addition that allows owners to safely secure goods in the load compartment, away from prying eyes and protected from the elements.

Inside the Ranger Raptor Special Edition’s double cab interior, a bespoke feel is delivered with red stitching for the steering wheel, instrument panel and door cards and a Special Edition-only Raceway Grey instrument panel adds further exclusivity.

The new Ranger Raptor adds twin matte black racing stripes – edged with red contrast lines – to the bonnet, roof, lower body sides, rear wings, and tailgate to further emphasise the bakkie’s high-performance character.

The flared wheel arches, front and rear bumpers, door handles, and signature Ford-embossed grille feature a matte black finish. Also new to this exclusive model is the integrated black sports hoop which adds further sporting flair to the Ranger Raptor’s muscular appearance.

The Ranger Raptor features a 150mm wider track and 51mm taller ride height than the standard Ranger for greater off-road capability.

The bespoke suspension uses aluminium double wishbones at the front and a multi-link rear architecture, including specially developed FOX shock absorbers with Position Sensitive Damping that moderates damping forces in response to changing driving scenarios.

Here are several simple ways South African motorists can mitigate the impact of these latest fuel increases.

A fuel-saving mindset and driving style can make a big difference at the pumps and to your pocket. Below are some valuable tips that can help you be a greener, more fuel-efficient driver both on- and off-road.

Choose a fuel-efficient engine

Both the Ford Ranger and Everest are available with a range of engines that have been designed and developed to deliver an impressive combination of performance and efficiency. In the most recent WesBank Fuel Economy Tour, Ford's 2.0-litre Single Turbo engine saw the Ford Ranger beat all its rivals and take class victory with a winning fuel consumption figure 6.8l/100km.

Drive sensibly

Aggressive acceleration and braking can increase your fuel consumption by up to 30%. What you want to do is accelerate gently. Once you're at the speed limit, maintain the posted limit while scanning the road ahead. If you do spot a traffic issue up ahead, lift off the throttle earlier to reduce speed gradually, rather than diving on the brakes at the last minute only to accelerate hard again to reach the desired speed. One handy hint when you're driving on the highway is to make use of cruise control. This will help maintain the posted speed limit without sudden fuel-sucking fluctuations in speed; just remember to deactivate the cruise control when there are hazardous driving conditions.

Speed matters

It's simple, the faster you go, the more fuel you'll use. Up to around 80km/h, the energy required to overcome wind resistance on a vehicle is minimal. But push beyond that, and drag increases exponentially. Driving 80km/h in a 100km/h zone might get you great economy, but it will also frustrate your fellow motorists. So, use common sense and be aware that the harder your vehicle has to work, the more fuel you'll use.

Talking tyres

Ensure your vehicle's tyres are inflated as per the manufacturer's recommendation (usually located on a sticker on the door sill – or in the owner's manual). The importance of properly inflated tyres goes beyond just reducing rolling resistance and improving fuel efficiency: it's also about vehicle safety. Over-inflate your tyres, and you risk reduced grip and increased wear. Similarly, drive with tyre pressures too low. You'll increase the rolling resistance, which means your vehicle will be working harder to travel at the same speed.

Service is serious

Make sure you keep your vehicle regularly serviced. Your Ford dealership will run your vehicle through a barrage of checks during each service, picking up on things like faulty sensors that can lead to increased fuel use. For instance, fixing a faulty oxygen sensor could improve your vehicle's fuel efficiency by around 40%. Similarly, using the wrong engine oil in your vehicle can affect fuel consumption by up to 2%.
