The new Ford Ranger Thunder is here! The Ranger is one of the best-selling vehicles in South Africa, and now Ford has released another special Ranger, called the Thunder.
Based on the existing Wildtrak, the new Thunder edition features an updated tough and distinctive design with an edgier look for customers who aren't afraid to be noticed. It is characterized by:
New 2.0 Single Turbo engine with AdBlue®
The all-new automatic derivatives of the Tourneo Custom Bus are powered by the latest generation 2.0-litre Single Turbo diesel engine, which is derived from the impressive units used in the current Ford Ranger and Everest models.
Two versions of this engine are available, with the unit in the mid-level Tourneo Custom Trend producing 96kW of power matched to 385Nm of torque. The top-spec Tourneo Custom Limited delivers 136kW allied to a substantial torque peak of 415Nm – which guarantees impressive all-round performance, whether negotiating traffic in busy city commutes or heading out onto the open road.
In both models, power is delivered to the front wheels via the six-speed automatic transmission that does duty in the current Ranger 2.2 and 3.2-litre models, delivering great responsiveness and all-round performance. It offers conventional automatic shifting in “Drive”, as well as “Sport” mode for more responsive performance. Additionally, “Manual” mode with SelectShift gives the driver control over the gearshift points, which is particularly useful when towing.
All-new dashboard, SYNC®3 for the first time on Tourneo
While the exterior styling of the new Tourneo Custom automatic models is unchanged from the recently facelifted range, the cabin environment has been enhanced with an all-new dashboard and instrument panel based on Ford’s new interior design philosophy – pioneered on the current Fiesta and EcoSport. This offers an attractive, user-centric layout that is influenced by consumer interactions with smart devices and tablets.
Ford’s SYNC®3 communications and entertainment system sees its first introduction in the range-topping Tourneo Custom Limited Automatic, allowing drivers to control audio functions and connected smartphones using simple, conversational voice commands.
On the Trend Automatic, a four-inch screen is supplied, using a simpler version of SYNC®3. On both systems, a total of eight USB ports are located throughout the cabin for charging mobile devices. An integrated 230v power socket is available as an optional item to power various devices, such as laptop computers, while on the move.
Exceptional safety and standard features
The Tourneo Custom boasts an extensive array of standard and optional safety features. In the event of a collision, occupants are protected with a full array of front, curtain and side impact airbags as standard fitment. This is complemented by active driving safety features including the Electronic Stability Programme (ESP) with Hill Launch Assist (HLA), Roll-Over Mitigation (ROM), Electronic Brakeforce Distribution (EBD) and Emergency Brake Assist (EBA). Additionally, Ford’s Tyre Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) is fitted on both derivatives, which alerts the driver as soon as any tyre deflation is detected.
The extensive range of optional items, available on Trend and Limited models, includes front and rear parking sensors, a rear parking camera, Lane Keeping Aid and Lane Departure Warning, as well as the Blind Spot Detection System (BLIS) with Cross-Traffic Alert and trailer coverage.
The new automatic models are equipped as standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, while the existing manual derivatives retain 16-inch rims.
At CMH Kempster Ford Randburg we care about you and your family. We pride ourselves on our Ford products and their ability to make your life on the road safe and enjoyable every time.

“Kick off 2021” just got an extra kick with the All-New Ford Mustang Mach 1. A beast in its own league.
The New Ford Mustang Mach 1 leaves no room for humility, its loud heritage and innovative prowess is evident from a mile away. Equipped with a 5.0 litre V8 all-aluminium engine, 450 hp/ 343kw and a peak torque of 529Nm the Mach 1 is a beast unto its own and carries the technology to support it. Strapped with electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) software, the Mach 1 still takes the trophy over the most gruesome curves and bends; offering the precise steering of any Mustang to date. To emphasise this fact, the Mach 1 is suited with the MagneRide 2 adjustable suspension system which electronically controls the magnetorheological fluid inside the damper to respond in real time to changing road conditions.
In the spirit of optimum performance and driving experience the Mach 1 offers a choice in transmissions options. The TREMEC 3160 six-speed manual transmission uses a twin-disc clutch to comfortably manage aggressive, high-rpm gear-changes on track, and provides a short-throw shift action for fast, consistent shifts that maximise performance and the fun-to-drive factor. The advanced Ford 10-speed automatic transmission includes an upgraded torque converter and unique calibration for Mustang Mach 1, optimising torque capability shift character and overall power and performance with half the effort.
In true Mach 1 fashion, it doesn’t end there. The burly figured beast offers a distinctive, race- derived, aerodynamic look which has been the core component of its predecessors, but it's not all for show. This aerodynamic shape creates more downforce for an improved grip on the track, 22% more than the Mustang GT. The front and side grill provide improved cooling performance for such a hard-working machine.
As a cherry on top, the Mach 1 provides a uniquely tuned Active Valve Performance Exhaust feature that helps you calibrate the sound of your exhaust, from quiet to Track, unleashing the full might and unmistakable sound of the Ford V8.
Enquire now about the All-new Ford Mustang Mach 1, it’s a whole new league.

CMH Kempster Ford Pretoria embarked on a journey in Ford Guest Experience (FGE) which is mainly a commitment we wanted to partake in delivering a sales and service experience that is distinctly Ford, and that all our guests love because every guest is special.
So to help us carry this through and sustain it we had the honour to have three interns who will be embarking on this journey with us and “excitement” is an understatement to use to describe what the opportunity of having these three energetic interns made us feel!
When we received the email from Ford introducing the three ladies whom we’d take under our wing to introduce and coach them about the real corporate we couldn’t be more delighted.
The three interns named: Zenande Picane, Kate Mtileni and Lehlogonolo Mako started with us on the 11th January 2021 and here is what they had to say about themselves:
Kate Mtileni is currently studying Public Relations through the University of South Africa and she has done marketing / promotions since 2014, she says she is passionate about make-up and is self thought. Kate started trading clothing as a side business (Mhhh I think we have a smart young lady over here)
“At a time like this where a lot of our youth especially graduates are unemployed whilst our country’s unemployment rate continues to rise above the waves, one may say that it is with great honour to be one of the few candidates that was selected to be part of YES4Youth Programme with Ford”, Says Zenande Picane who is an artist by profession and she highlights that during this Coronavirus Pandemic, majority of artists are and were left stranded as their work has to do with the mass being in contact and that is where she was rescued by the YES4YOUTH PROGRAMME.
Ms Picane says The YES programme has already created a future vision for her as to how one should conduct themselves in the corporate world in terms of being professional and being customer orientated. She further says as a young black woman, she is ready for the YES PROGRAMME to educate her in all aspects of the business!
Last but not least, we have Lehlogonolo Mako who is studying towards a degree in Law through the University of South Africa but she says marketing and sales is definitely her hobby ( well isn’t she at the right place). Lehlogonolo says she is passionate about working with different people in different fields, she speaks on not going to limit herself and that she will strive to do her best and work hard with every opportunity coming her way.
Lehlogonolo says she is learning how fast paced the industry is and all the challenges but she is willing to take it right ON!
We are extremely delighted to have them and we hope to impart all the necessary skills to these three SO positive women. From all of us at CMH Kempster Ford Pretoria, We wish them a great year with us and a brighter future!
The New Limited-Edition Ranger Thunder will make you grab your raincoat and prepare for a storm because Ford has decided to expand their truck range with the all New Limited-Edition Ranger Thunder! But what makes this model unique from other Ranger models? Let’s compare the Thunder to Ford’s existing line-up to answer this question.
Off the bat we know that this model is special because only limited stock of the New Limited-Edition Ranger Thunder is manufactured and available for purchase. Due to this limited availability, potential owners will have to jump at the chance to get their hands on this powerful vehicle!Let’s start off by comparing the performance of the Thunder, Wildtrak and Raptor models. Under the hood, all three vehicles have a 2.0L Bi-Turbo 4-Cylinder Diesel Engine and drive via a 10-speed automatic transmission.
Furthermore, the Thunder and the Wildtrak both have a fuel consumption of 7.8L/100km, while the Raptor uses 8.3L/100km. The Raptor emits 220g of CO2 per km, while the Wildtrak and Thunder both emit 207g of CO2 per km The Raptor is known for its ultra-durable and larger frame, so it consumes slightly more fuel than the Wildtrak and Thunder models.
The maximum power for all the models is 157Nm @ 3750rpm and all three of these vehicles have a maximum Torque of 500Nm @ 1500-2000rpm. The Thunder also showcases a 210-horsepower diesel engine like the Raptor model.
Both the Raptor and the New Limited-Edition Ranger Thunder utilises 4-wheel drive as standard, while the Wildtrak also has a 4X2 option. All three vehicles come with a double cab configuration as standard. The double cab configuration offers more space for work and play. The only considerable difference is the size of the Raptor model.
The Raptor is 4mm longer and 51mm wider than the Wildtrak model. The Raptor’s ground clearance also increased from the Wildtrak’s 230mm to 283mm. The Thunder’s ground clearance is between the Raptor and Wildtrak with a clearance of 237mm.
Performance-wise it is clear that the Thunder slots in just above the Wildtrak and below the Raptor. So, what really makes the Thunder unique and worth consideration? Let’s look at the cosmetic and technological features of the Thunder.
Even though it is based on the Wildtrak, the Thunder showcases some impressive standard features such as exclusive 18-inch wheels, LED headlights, bold red highlights on the exterior and 3-dimensional badges that accentuates the matte-black Thunder logos displayed on the exterior of the vehicle’s body.
While the Ford Ranger Wildtrak offers a leather-seat combination of leather and high-quality durable materials, the Thunder and the Raptor models have 100% leather seating.
It is also evident that each model has a different interior colour scheme. The Wildtrak is known for its vibrant orange and black spacious seating with orange stitching, while the Raptor has sleek black, blue and grey body-contoured sport seats with suede inserts. The Thunder, on the other hand, has distinctive Ebony leather seats with Thunder embroidery and matching stitching in bold red. This stitching is also visible on the steering wheel, the cabin and the instrument panel.
When it comes to technological features all three cars have Ford SYNC*3 with voice activation, 2X USB ports, 6 speakers, rear-view cameras, lane keeping aid, and 8” colour screens, just to name a few! However, the Thunder also has 2 X 4.2” TFT screens in cluster and navigation (Ford.co.za, 2020) The Thunder’s steering wheel also provides newly designed multi-functional buttons and rear floor storage that improves your overall driving experience. This impressive truck also has a forward collision warning system that allows the vehicle to brake on its own in case of an emergency.
The Thunder definitely has some impressive and bold exterior and interior features, but does the price reflect the value of the vehicle? With an estimated cost of R800 000, the Thunder once again comes in between the Wildtrak (R753 600) and the Raptor (R875 000).
As previously stated, the performance and features of the Thunder puts it in between the Wildtrak and Raptor models, and its price reflects that nicely. With its exclusive features this limited-edition model is a great option for all Ranger lovers!
The Ford Ranger Thunder was made to stand out with its dramatic colour-contrasting exterior and unique interior specifications. It delivers an assertive and bold design without compromising the powerful Thunder’s practicality.
The Thunder is a limited-edition vehicle that you do not want to miss out on! But don’t take our word for it, go test drive one today!

Ingenuity and determination are two traits that South Africans have in abundance, especially when it comes to building bespoke vehicles that would eventually become revered the world over.
Undeterred, and with plenty of technical expertise to draw upon, South Africa went through a period of fascinating homologations that produced a dazzling array of road cars including the Capri Perana V8, the Sierra XR6 and the Sierra XR8, which performed exceptionally well on the sales charts, and even took the motorsport world by storm, leaving an indelible mark on the country’s motoring heritage.
The Bakkies That Helped Build a Nation
Ford’s reputation for toughness was forged initially by vehicles like the Ford Cortina bakkie – exclusively sold in South Africa and a true embodiment of the country’s heritage. The Cortina bakkie was instrumental in building many of the landmarks that we see around us today, and helped fuel South African’s affinity with the venerable bakkie.
According to Grant, there might be no other vehicle that symbolises South African motoring more than the Ford Cortina bakkie. Eight prototypes were built at Ford’s Port Elizabeth plant until the Cortina bakkie was launched in 1971.
It paved the way for another South African legend, the Bantam bakkie. This half-ton small utility vehicle with passenger car-derived handling and safety used the locally produced 1.3-litre Kent engine, as well as the UK-sourced Fiesta engine ancillaries. The RoCam engine which powered later generations was a key part of the Struandale Engine Plant story, with 1 346 919 units produced from 2000 to 2012.
Ford’s 96-year manufacturing heritage in South Africa would be incomplete without the internationally successful Ford Ranger, which has been assembled locally since 2011 and is exported to over 100 markets around the world. Two totally unique versions of the Ranger have been added to FMCSA’s Heritage models – and have helped reaffirm Ford’s commitment to South Africa.
Heritage Day in 2019 was shown in all its splendour by a one-of-a-kind Ford Ranger painted in the colours of the South African flag, and included its rich diversity of cultures, arts and wildlife by FMCSA’s own Paint Shop at the Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria. It took a team of five artists, three sprayers, and one assembler a total of 650 hours to produce, with the result reminding all South Africans how much the nation loves bakkies.
Unique South African artwork reappeared on a Ford Ranger this year – given the name Mandla by employees at Ford’s Silverton plant – for Mandela Day in July 2020. The South African flag features again with a portrait of the country’s iconic former statesman, Nelson Mandela, painted on the bonnet.
As FMCSA closes in on a hundred years of local manufacturing, its esteemed local heritage becomes even more cherished by those who have worked on these defining motoring icons. Their positive attitude and competitive spirit continues to inspire the next chapter of Ford’s proudly South African heritage.
CMH Kempster Ford Randburg is proud to be a part of Ford’s Heritage in South Africa with 51 Years as a Ford Dealer behind our name. From humble beginnings in 1969 to what you see today in 2020, come in and see what our pedigree can do for you.
