Texting While Driving? It's Like Driving with Your Eyes Closed

  • Talking on cell phones - handheld or hands-free - affects our driving
  • Hands-free devices do not eliminate distraction
  • It's important to abandon hands-free even though the law permits it
Every text and selfies which captures your attention for even a second can diminish your awareness while driving. It can be hazardous to you and those around you. Yes, this kind of negligence can cause an accident and that's one accident too many. The reality is that every time you pick up your phone while driving, you see and concentrate less. You stop watching your surrounding environment - in front, behind, to the right and left. Your field of vision shrinks. This neglect can even cause you miss what is right in front of you.

Brain drain

Park Your Phone - Visual Distractions Research shows that the brain cannot handle processing two tasks simultaneously effectively. It can switch between the tasks however your reaction time is diminished while these actions are being performed. Many people think they can do two things at once but it's just not possible to concentrate fully on both simultaneously. Drivers stop monitoring their environment and new drivers in particular aren't in the habit of scanning the road for hazards. Dividing your attention for even a second makes for an even more dangerous combination. Derek Kirkby, Training Director for Ford's global Driving Skills for Life (DSFL) programme in South Africa, says: "In my experience of training hundreds of drivers, I'd say that even normal, everyday driving uses around 85 per cent of your mental load. Sending one text or selfie, and even talking with a passenger, can overload the brain while driving - increasing the risk of an accident." "When you're using 85 per cent of your brainpower to drive, your mind isn't capable of doing much else," adds Kirkby. "Regardless of whether you're a professional or new to the road - you will be a safer driver if you understand how much of your brain you're using just to drive the car."

The New Ford Ranger Raptor coming soon

November 8, 2023 By Rokkit

Thailand - Ford has unveiled its first performance-tuned Ranger Raptor at a world debut in Bangkok. The automaker made its global debut of the first Ranger Raptor bakkie at a world-class event on Wednesday (February 7 2019). More exciting is the fact that this bakkie will also be built locally at the Silverton factory in Pretoria. While the Ranger Raptor has been hugely-anticipated, and is most certainly a striking bakkie, South African motorists could be puzzled by the fact that it's is only available with a 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel. However, the automaker is convinced the smaller engine is the best option for its new bakkie. Ford announced in September 2017 that its hugely popular Ranger bakkie will be available in an off-road performance variant for the first time. The purpose-built, desert-racing inspired bakkie joins the Ford Performance family, as the new ‘Ranger Raptor ‘ Ford SA says: "The Ranger Raptor will be coming to South Africa, with further information to be revealed in due course. There is no estimated time of arrival as yet. "Designed and engineered to deliver an adrenaline pumping experience, Ford Ranger Raptor sports a head-turning exterior look that exudes toughness as well as a level of capability and off-road performance never before seen in the mid-size bakkie segment. "Sharing the same nomenclature as the F-150 Raptor, the world’s most extreme production bakkie, Ranger Raptor is in a class of its own among mid-size off-road performance vehicles."

So what makes the Ranger Raptor distinctive?

In terms of styling, the Raptor features a new, huge grille, bumper, bold wheel arches and fenders with grey accents. Ford says there are new sheet moulding compound (SMC) front fenders which wrap around the 150mm wider stance from the track. It sports 2.3mm thick high-strength steel for underbody protection. At the rear there's a unique box side, redesigned bumper and tow-bar integration along with a functional aluminium die-cast side step. Inside, there are beautiful sculpted eats, upholstery and signature blue stitches in lightning blue. Ford reckons its cabin has been designed for comfort and confidence with the Ford Performance DNA running throughout its styling. The steering wheel has a red stripe on top of the wheel as a centre marker. It also has unique spokes, debossed graphic and magnesium paddle shifters.

Driving modes

The other aspect of the Raptor's speciality is its Terrain Management System (TMS) which has six various modes to choose from to suite any kind of driving surface, including one called Baja mode. Despite the Baja Dessert Race being highly acclaimed internationally, we reckon this could have been better suited as the Dakar mode for local buyers. But then again, that would be stepping on Toyota's toes with its Hilux. Ford reckons: "Each mode has been precisely calibrated to offer the best possible combination of technologies working in unison to tackle the chosen driving style with sangfroid." Each mode can be selected via a dedicated five-button switch located on the steering wheel.

On-road modes

    1. Normal mode: Emphasising comfort, fuel economy and driveability
    2. Sport mode: Responsive for spirited on-road driving. This means fast, crisp gear shifts at higher engine speeds to aid throttle response. The mapping reacts to increased demand inputs from the driver by holding gears longer and downshifting more aggressively.

Off-road modes

  1. Grass/Gravel/Snow mode: Designed to inspire safe and confident driving on off-road slippery and uneven surfaces. This is done through smoother gear shifts and second-gear starts, minimizing the probability of wheel slip.
  2. Mud/Sand mode: Vehicle responsiveness is tuned for optimum traction and momentum in deep, deformable surfaces like loose sand and mud. This is achieved by maintaining lower gears with high torque.
  3. Rock mode: Used specifically for low-speed rocky terrain where smooth controllability is key.
  4. Baja mode: Vehicle responsiveness is tuned for high-speed off-road performance, just like drivers need in the famous Baja Desert Rally. In this mode, vehicle systems like Traction Control are pared back in terms of intervention to allow spirited off-road driving without fighting the vehicle’s on-board systems. Gear selection is optimized for maximum performance, and the mapping will hold gears longer and downshift more aggressively.

Adopt a School Initiative

November 8, 2023 By Rokkit

The CMH Kempster Ford Randburg Team had a great day out at Emthonjeni Community Centre and is proud to be affiliated with the Adopt a School Initiative.

About Emthonjeni Community Centre:

Emthonjeni has its roots deep within the community it serves believing that all people, no matter what age, race, gender, social and economic position or abilities, have opportunities to contribute to society and promote social upliftment. Care-based, relationship orientated services at Emthonjeni include:
  • Education
  • Sport & Recreation
  • Community Care

Education:

Early Childhood Development

Impact Africa

South Africa has over 5 million children up to the age of four, and another 6 million between the ages of five and nine. These children are South Africa’s future. They are going to head up homes, communities and businesses in the years ahead. Educational research has shown that a child’s brain is already developed 80% by the age of four and that they learn their most crucial life lessons and values in the early years of their lives. Impact kids ensures that two hundred (200) children of Kwaggafontein and Kromdraai are receiving the best possible pre-school education to equip them to lead fulfilling lives and that pre-school teaching standards are being maintained across the board.

Golang Education

Over the years we have realized that the greatest impact on a child’s life happens before he/she turns 7 years of age and that if we want to holistically nurture and develop children into the best person, we have to start working at a very young age. This is how the need for a top-quality pre-school, within walking distance, in Zandspruit, was identified. Our Pre-School Programme has been running for nine years and we have 60 pre-schoolers, being taught by three qualified teachers in three groups.

Community Care:

Emthonjeni strongly believes in holistically caring for the communities we so deeply love; by enlisting the help of the greater community, we offer them the opportunity to be a part of something that is for the greater good of all.

Community Care Initiatives include:

  • Caring for the well-being of our senior citizens
  • Reaching out to vulnerable children
  • Blanket and Food Drives
  • Mandela Day Celebrations
  • Disaster or Care Fund (Shack Fires/Flooding)
  • Corporate Outreach Programs

About the Community Food Gardens / Vegetable Gardens:

The Community Food Gardens at Emthonjeni is our chosen way of giving back to the community. CMH Kempster Ford Randburg sponsored the upgraded fencing around the Vegetable Gardens for a safe and secure future for this entrepreneurial endeavour for the community. The objective of these gardens is to improve the nutritional status of vulnerable people, supply vegetables to 3 nutritional kitchens, provide food for self-consumption and generate income for these individuals. At Emthonjeni we have set aside land for sustainable vegetable gardens. Senior citizens from Zandspruit Informal Settlement are given the necessary training, seeds and tools to successfully plant their gardens. We consider this vegetable garden to be an extremely beneficial initiative as it addresses the very real and practical nutritional needs of the aged. CMH Kempster Ford Randburg plans to continue our support of this amazing centre and all it is doing for the community starting with Blanket and Food Drives. All-New 2019 Ford Ranger in South Africa

November 8, 2023 By Rokkit

Production of New Ford Ranger Commences in South Africa

  • First new Ford Ranger production models emerge from Silverton Assembly Plant
  • Result of over R3-billion investment and extensive upgrades at Ford's local operations
  • New Ranger and first-ever Ranger Raptor destined for markets in Africa, Europe and Middle East

PRETORIA, South Africa, 11 February 2019 - Ford's Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria has officially commenced production of the new Ford Ranger, bringing a raft of product upgrades and refinements to one of South Africa's best-selling vehicles and export models.

Selected range-topping models, including the Ranger Raptor, will be powered by the all-new 2.0 Bi-Turbo diesel engine assembled at Ford's Struandale Engine Plant in Port Elizabeth. This unit produces 157kW and 500Nm of torque - up by 10kW and 30Nm compared with the current 3.2 TDCi - and delivers up to a nine percent improvement in fuel efficiency when combined with the advanced new 10-speed automatic transmission.

Certain derivatives will feature a 2.0 Single Turbo version of this engine, producing 132kW and 420Nm of torque, mated to the same 10-speed transmission. Various other models in the line-up will retain the proven 2.2 and 3.2-litre Duratorq TDCi engines and existing gearbox options - thus giving customers the widest choice yet in this category. As usual, the line-up includes Single Cab, Super Cab and Double Cab body styles to suit customer requirements.

Along with freshened design cues, range-topping Ranger models will raise the bar once again with industry-defining safety features on the Wildtrak such as Pre-Collision Assist and Active Park Assist. SYNC 3® with Navigation remains one of the Ranger's technology highlights as a fully featured infotainment system with intuitive voice control.

Following the launch of the 'standard' new Ford Ranger models, the attention will be shifted to the locally assembled Ranger Raptor that is set to create an entirely new segment in the pickup market when it makes its eagerly anticipated debut.

Some of the defining features of the Ranger Raptor include Position Sensitive Damping (PSD) shock absorbers exclusively manufactured by FOX, and an advanced Terrain Management System (TMS) that includes an exciting Baja mode for fast off-road driving. It also boasts a toughened reinforced chassis, powerful all-disc braking system and specially developed BF Goodrich tyres.

More details, including specifications, model range and pricing will be released at launch.

November 8, 2023 By Rokkit

We at CMH Ford Hatfield have a wide variety of Pre-owned Ford Approved and Ford Certified Vehicles. This can be very confusing to someone who does not understand what and how this affects the quality of the vehicle you are interested in or you are about to purchase. What does it mean when we say that a vehicle is Ford Approved or Ford Certified? Well, Ford Approved is Ford’s range of vehicles from a variety of brands that have gone for precise and comprehensive quality tests. Ford Certified vehicles go for the exact same rigorous testing, but these are exclusively for vehicles with some additional benefits. When purchasing a Ford Certified vehicle, Ford offers the following as a promise to you the consumer:
  1. 160 point quality check
  2. Mileage Verification
  3. Your Trade-in is welcome, should you wish to trade in your current vehicle.
  4. Full-Service history can be provided upon your request
  5. One Year Ford Protect Extended Warranty
  6. The balance of service plan (This may differ depending on models)
Ford Approved Sign One can be very sceptical about purchasing a Pre-owned vehicle however, you can still enjoy peace of mind when you purchase a Ford Certified Vehicle because of the promise we make to you. You are welcome to visit us at CMH Ford Hatfield to view and test drive our wide range of Ford Certified and Ford Approved Vehicles. We are situated on Cnr Jan Shoba and Park Street in Hatfield, Pretoria. FORD-APPROVED-GTI We go further-so can you!

All New Ford Ranger: It has arrived

Excitement was the order of the day at CMH Ford Hatfield on 6th April as we launched the much awaited 2019 All New Ford Ranger. Definitely one of our Favourites as a brand, we could not wait to share the excitement and experience with our customers. Let’s speak a little about the vehicle before we get into what made our launch day so special. The All New 2019 Ford Ranger personifies TOUGH, CAPABLE and COMFORTABLE with amazing changes to its interior and new innovative features. For one, you now have a “push start” button, which was not in the previous model, 800mm water wading capability, electronic rear locking system and driver assist features that make this vehicle a total “must-have”. The theme around the Ford Ranger Launch was “Ford Family Time” in Carnival style. Our customers enjoyed carnival food, music and beverages with a kiddies’ area helping mommy and daddy relax whilst they wait for their test drive. A photo booth allowed our customers to take family pictures and receive them instantly before they leave. Our sales executives were kept busy with lots of test drives and many questions. If you were unable to attend the launch, do yourself a favour and book a test drive with your family today. Our team is ready to help you experience this next level kind of vehicle. Remember we welcome your trade-ins!
