As Spring arrived, we at Ford Umhlanga made the commitment to go green to put a positive impact on the environment. As a result, we decided that all employees across all departments would participate. Due to the pollution in the air, our surrounding area needed an Eco-Friendly boost to assist our environment, so we decided to give back to nature.

Researching what plant would be the best fit, we came across the Spekboom, a succulent plant native to South Africa. Among its many Spekboom facts is that it is indigenous to the province of the Eastern Cape and is revered as a miracle plant. Bright green, small-leaved plant found in Southern Africa looks ordinary, but don't be fooled - it is very special!

Below are a few of the many fascinating facts about this plant.

#1 Leaves are Edible

The taste of spekboom leaf is pleasant but changes throughout the day as the sun rises and sets. During the day leaves have an acid flavour and become less acidic towards the evening. The delicious greenery is heavily browsed by game and a firm favourite of several wild animals, especially elephants!

#2 Communities Use Spekboom Leaves for Their Medicinal Values

The leaves are used medicinally and in traditional home construction.

#3 It Helps to Fight Climate Change and Air Pollution

This plant helps to remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by acting as a carbon sponge, improving the quality of the air we breathe. More specifically, spekboom can absorb between four and ten tonnes of carbon per hectare. This incredible tree uses carbon to make plant tissue and produce oxygen. According to The Spekboom Foundation, spekboom’s capacity to offset harmful carbon emissions is compared to that of moist, subtropical forests. This remarkable plant is unique in that it stores solar energy to perform photosynthesis at night. This makes a spekboom thicket 10 times more effective per hectare at carbon fixing than any tropical rainforest.”

This definitely was motivating to everyone involved and really touched a special place in their heart knowing that we played our part in the fight against global warming by simply planting a spekboom plant at our dealership!!!

Here are several simple ways South African motorists can mitigate the impact of these latest fuel increases.

A fuel-saving mindset and driving style can make a big difference at the pumps and to your pocket. Below are some valuable tips that can help you be a greener, more fuel-efficient driver both on- and off-road.

Choose a fuel-efficient engine

Both the Ford Ranger and Everest are available with a range of engines that have been designed and developed to deliver an impressive combination of performance and efficiency. In the most recent WesBank Fuel Economy Tour, Ford's 2.0-litre Single Turbo engine saw the Ford Ranger beat all its rivals and take class victory with a winning fuel consumption figure 6.8l/100km.

Drive sensibly

Aggressive acceleration and braking can increase your fuel consumption by up to 30%. What you want to do is accelerate gently. Once you're at the speed limit, maintain the posted limit while scanning the road ahead. If you do spot a traffic issue up ahead, lift off the throttle earlier to reduce speed gradually, rather than diving on the brakes at the last minute only to accelerate hard again to reach the desired speed. One handy hint when you're driving on the highway is to make use of cruise control. This will help maintain the posted speed limit without sudden fuel-sucking fluctuations in speed; just remember to deactivate the cruise control when there are hazardous driving conditions.

Speed matters

It's simple, the faster you go, the more fuel you'll use. Up to around 80km/h, the energy required to overcome wind resistance on a vehicle is minimal. But push beyond that, and drag increases exponentially. Driving 80km/h in a 100km/h zone might get you great economy, but it will also frustrate your fellow motorists. So, use common sense and be aware that the harder your vehicle has to work, the more fuel you'll use.

Talking tyres

Ensure your vehicle's tyres are inflated as per the manufacturer's recommendation (usually located on a sticker on the door sill – or in the owner's manual). The importance of properly inflated tyres goes beyond just reducing rolling resistance and improving fuel efficiency: it's also about vehicle safety. Over-inflate your tyres, and you risk reduced grip and increased wear. Similarly, drive with tyre pressures too low. You'll increase the rolling resistance, which means your vehicle will be working harder to travel at the same speed.

Service is serious

Make sure you keep your vehicle regularly serviced. Your Ford dealership will run your vehicle through a barrage of checks during each service, picking up on things like faulty sensors that can lead to increased fuel use. For instance, fixing a faulty oxygen sensor could improve your vehicle's fuel efficiency by around 40%. Similarly, using the wrong engine oil in your vehicle can affect fuel consumption by up to 2%.

Spring into action with our helpful spring tips

As winter ends and spring approaches, we should also prepare our vehicles.

This season, we'd like to share with you some helpful tips for getting your vehicle ready.

1. Inspect your wiper blades with the arrival of spring. We know some rain is likely to follow. It is in your best interest to change your wiper blades. This will improve your visibility and minimize the likelihood of an accident.
2. Check your vehicle fluids. Ensure fluids such as brake fluids are sufficient. Brake fluids help the braking system. Without it, more pressure is required on the pedal to stop your vehicle.
3. Change Air Filters - Before you go ahead with spring and summer road trips, be sure to change your air filter as it improves your engines air quality.
4. Check your tyre pressure – The cold winter temperatures could have caused your tyre pressure to decrease. Also, under-inflated tyres can reduce your vehicle's fuel efficiency.
5. Deodorize your vehicle -After keeping the windows shut for most of the winter season. De-clutter your vehicle and leave an open container with coffee beans for this.

The team at CMH Kempster Ford Durban, along with a few of our customers, enjoyed an adventure-filled 4x4 weekend at Black Rock, near Kosibay, courtesy of Ford South Africa.

It has been a weekend full of sand trails, adrenaline-pumping experiences, bombing ranges and much more. The event began with a 4x4 tech talk on how to best prepare your vehicle for the toughest roads. Our very brave drivers also learned how to plan and evaluate angles correctly before taking on an obstacle.

We were able to refresh and align our perspective on off-road driving due to this trip since there are many points to note before beginning to drive. We thoroughly enjoyed all activities, from being blindfolded while tackling obstacles to climbing daunting sand dunes!

After all that action, our team certainly worked up some appetites - kudos to our talented chefs! As the weekend progressed, we had the opportunity to interact with the Ford family from various parts of KZN and enjoy the pristine scenery of Black Rock.

From this trip, we learned many valuable tips and tricks that we will be sure to share with our future Ford Ranger 4x4 drivers, so you can too enjoy the full 4x4 experience.

Wow, what a month August has been. We celebrated birthdays, women’s day, a Farewell, and many other events.

On a cool early Winters morning, our pre-owned sales executives decided to display some of our awesome vehicles on the main highway intersection that leads to our dealership. This display created such a presence that we had numerous clients phoning in and some emailing us complimenting us on the great initiative. Our Staff had such Fun that day, people were hooting and waving, a video was taken and has been posted on our Facebook page and a great presence was created. This is the beginning of greater things to come.

August was a great birthday month in the dealership. We celebrated 4 staff members special day.

Marissa our F & I for new cars, Collen our sales executive for new cars, Dudu our Intern and Johanna our receptionist all had their special day in August. A small gift was handed over to each of these special people and to see the appreciation and excitement in their faces, makes it so special, as birthdays are meant to be celebrated.

In addition, this month was Women's Month, so we had an event in the dealership to celebrate. On the 9th of August, our dealership was open until noon, where we advertised a test drive on the all-new EcoSport special, as well as prizes to be won. Additionally, we had hampers made for the ladies. During a normal day at work, the ladies work hard, support each other, and keep the esprit high. Having FUN in the dealership is what makes us an awesome TEAM.

And finally, we said our final Goodbye/Farewell to Kea on 26th August. Kea was the Lead master/Academy Ambassador at CMH Ford Hatfield for the past 4 years. She has been such an inspiration to many of the Staff and has been a great asset to the dealership. We wish her well with her new endeavours and know she will make a huge success going forward. CMH Ford Hatfield will miss you very much Kea, you imprinted on our Hearts.

The Stormtrak is coming after The Ranger Thunder!

Since its launch a year ago, the Stormtrak has been exceptionally well received, proving unambiguously that there is a market for range-topping models that are different from the norm.

DEALER PRINCIPAL:

As a New Vehicle Sales Exec, Juran Bekker began his career in the motor industry learning everything from scratch, but that was his goal because it was his first break into the industry. He pursued great results and provided excellent customer service.

He started in one of our sister branches where he learned and perfected his craft, Juran then got a promotion to a position as a New Vehicles Sales Manager.

CMH Steyn's Ford welcomed Mr Bekker as our Dealer Principal in March 2021. According to Juran, he has a passion for people and providing excellent customer service. For him, the best result is a satisfied customer whether it is in the Service Department, New Vehicle Sales, Pre-owned Vehicle Sales and Parts Department since every customer is special and should be treated as such under his leadership.

Juran says his goal is to give CMH Steyn's Ford a complete overhaul as part of the initiative to revive business in Pretoria CBD and provide our customers with a world-class dealership experience.

NEW VEHICLES SALES MANAGER:

Eugene Greeff started his career in the motor industry with Nissan, Alfa & Fiat in 2004 as a sales executive after growing up on the farm. He began his career in 2007 as a sales manager and moved to full-time management later in his career.

As Eugene rose through the ranks, he later became a Regional Manager, and then a Dealer Principal. 3 dealerships have gone from average-performing to top-10 in less than a year in their various categories under his guidance.

As Eugene makes clear, "What drives me is my work and our products". He recalls growing up around his father's Ford Cortina bakkie, which fascinated him from a young age.

Eugene believes attitude plays a major role in life. He says that a smile on the faces of customers makes every day fruitful. “Knowing that you help people with one of the biggest investments in their lives makes every second super.

Customer satisfaction is his highest priority, and a customer's smile is his best reference.

PRE-OWNED VEHICLES SALES MANAGER:

In addition to over 30 years of experience in the motor industry, Norman Chauke started as a sales exec before working his way up.

Drive and dedication will always result in excellent results according to Norman.

He is passionate about customer service and has a positive attitude towards his work. Norman says in the department that he is in, the customer needs to trust you and what you are offering and states that that’s where honesty and integrity come in.

In his opinion, you should put the needs of your customers first and assist them as much as possible.

Through the years he also learned that as a manager you must take care of your staff, as they will take care of your customers, and happy customers will always bring you more business.

SERVICE / WORKSHOP MANAGER:

Jacques Claassen is a joyous and eager professional who says his focus is to deliver outstanding customer service. He has worked in the service industry for over 22 years. His highest priority is to arrive at work well before the job starts so that he is prepared for the schedule ahead.

Being involved in all aspects of the service department is also very important to him. He assists in checking in all the customers each morning, chatting with them as he does so.

One thing he emphasizes as he rarely sits at a desk is being hands-on in the actual work in the workshop, asking for information from technicians, workshop foreman, and service advisors about every single vehicle in the workshop, and stating how important customers are to him.

As well as believing in teamwork, he says if there is teamwork, everyone works towards the same goal and the results of teamwork are always excellent. He says in the 22 years of service he has learned that if you look after your customers, they will look after you.

In response to the remarkable success of the limited-edition Ford Ranger Thunder in 2020, Ford South Africa is introducing another unique and appealing model based on the upmarket Wildtrak - the Ranger Stormtrak - later this year.

As with the Thunder edition, the Ranger Stormtrak is based on the Wildtrak derivative, bridging the gap between that and the Raptor variant. A mesh grille with red inserts along with a black insert in the lower bumper, black decals on the bonnet and doors, black roof rails, and gloss black 18-inch alloy wheels distinguish the new edition. Additionally, you'll find 'Stormtrak' logos on the lower front doors and the tailgate.

There are three exterior colours available for the Ranger Stormtrak: Sea Grey, Frozen White and Blue Lightning. However, the exclusive new colour, Lucid Red, is the one you'll want. Ford has added more than flashy aesthetics to the new edition of the F-150, as it also has some practical features, including a load bed divider kit, a bedliner and a Power Roller Shutter.

Ford's flagship 2,0-litre twin-turbo diesel engine produces 157 kW and 500 N.m. and is mated to a 10-speed automatic transmission.

Inside, the Ranger Stormtrak features illuminated scuff plates, leather seats with the Stormtrak logo, and red contrast stitching, which appears on the dashboard, steering wheel, and gear lever. Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Collision Alert, Autonomous Emergency Braking, Lane Keeping Alert, Parallel Park Assist and Sync3 infotainment system with built-in navigation and FordPass remote access are among the standard features.
